Surge in demand for luxury homes

The number of properties changing hands for more than £1 million in the UK has doubled in the last year.

In a report published by Halifax Estate Agents, there were some 7,076 homes sold for £1million or more last year, almost double the number sold in 2005.

The figures showed that 1,055 of the homes sold were located in the north of England, compared to only 224 in 2004.
